'Hilbert Junior High , Dave and Shawn meet, become instant friends, and share a love for Ozzy, Metallica, and very soon after many death metal bands such as Death, Obituary, and Cannibal Corpse. Shawn wants to start a band, so Dave learns the bass, while he learns guitar and works on vocals. Dave finally picks up drums, and a full band is formed with Dave’s brother Jo, and other friends. There were many members rotating in the first 6 months, but Shawn and Dave remained the core of the band.
After a long time of trying, Shawn and Dave became a two piece and recorded Drained. 200 copies were made, and a few parties proved to be fun for the band. Things started to really pick up, as shows were booked at clubs in Detroit, such as the I-Rock, as well as many high school parties. Then ,due to childish behavior, the band broke up for a while. Shawn and Dave joined other bands. Shawn soon fell into demonology and withdrew from Dave
'January 1997 was to be the year of trying new things. Dave was determined to do all the drugs he could. On January 5th, however. He got saved. Shawn was soon after, and the band carried on. We kept our gory lyrics and guillotine stage show. We entered the studio and recorded Decay in February. We figured we would share our new hope in Christ with our death metal stage show. Ron Holt soon joined the band to play bass, but unfortunately never worked out. It seemed like no one could fit into our two piece band. Shawn lost his house where we practiced, and the band was on a two year hiatus.
Soon after Dave got his house, God told Shawn that we should get the band back together. At that time, we didn't know there were other Christian metal bands, and we didn't understand why God would want us to continue. We soon realized that we needed to change our lyrics and played once again on Halloween 1999. Since the beginning back in 1993, we only missed playing one Halloween party to date. The lyrics were mostly changed to all but a few songs, and the beginnings of the true heart of the current band took root. Eventually all the songs had new lyrics, and additional new songs were written. The new album Reborn was ready to be recorded. Jim Quigley joined the band, and we put off the album for a while to teach him the songs. Tired of waiting, the Freed From Torment CD was recorded at practice and distributed for a short time. Jim didn’t work out, and we resumed working on the album after a long difficult time.
Playing shows took off, but time ran out; working 11 hours a day, building the web site, answering Email, Life became crazy. The album looked like it would never come out. It was promised spring 2001. The Crucifier was 5 songs taken from the studio. In the middle of all this Lane Wakeman joined the band and fit right in. He started playing shows after 2 practices, and hadn’t missed a beat. Spiritually we have grown the most in this time. The band is completely ministry. Ministry first - fun second. We try to be completely professional, with the notion that we are representatives of the living God. We hope to share our Hope with people all over the world. We are on radio stations in USA, Sweden, and Norway. Also, we have gotten a lot of good reviews on the Internet. It has been the idea of two friends sticking together that has made this band stay around through everything. The future was looking good for Secretion.
Reborn has made its way on to a CD. This project was in the makings for 7 years. Some songs are that old, and some are very recent. This is what we have all wanted for quite some time. The day after its release, Lane moved on. To clear any rumors that may start, he left on his own. We loved having him around. He fit well with the band. This means that we are now a 2 piece band. We have always loved it being that way since we work extremely well together. We decided not to look for other members, but carried on as we always have.
After a banner year, and a lot of fun, Dave decided to stop to raise a family. Early that year, the announcement was made to Shawn with a request to carry on the band. He refused and the band officially stated that it was finished. CD requests still came in through 2004 while Dave had his first child. Secretion.com was receiving offers, but the band could not part with it. The website fell into ruins and Dave and Shawn went their separate ways living about an hour apart. Keeping in contact was difficult as we worked opposite shifts, but we remained good friends. The music remained as a permanent bond to the friendship.
After a trip to Florida in December 2021 to see the members of Death do a tribute show to Chuck, it was clear to resurrect the website and keep the music going for anyone interested. Through out the years, Shawn and Dave's friendship has been solid and the bond of metal brotherhood was never broken. Seeing the Last Suffocation tour and other shows through out the years remind us that we love the music and the people. Meeting people at shows and being part of the metal scene is in our blood. We had 13 songs that needed to be recorded and an album cover that has been waiting to be used. After a long year and a half, Secretion got back together practicing and recording to release new music after 22 years! Message of Blood is a 3 song EP showing a taste of what Final Return is going to be.
In 2010, the album Final Return was discussed. Songs were written and an album cover was created, but it has been waiting in the background until 2024. Currently being recorded and due out in 2024, Secretion is happy to finally get this out for those who have supported us and kept the hope alive. Secretion has been a ministry since 1999. Metal is in our blood and Christ is in our hearts - that is what makes Secretion what it is. Thank you to everyone who has helpped us throughout the years, there are many!
